Josephine Commons in Lafayette, Colorado is a 14 acre residential community being developed by the Boulder County Housing Authority to provide affordable senior and family housing for county residents. Josephine Commons is unique in its goal to provide affordable housing options for families and seniors in a sustainable environment that encourages intergenerational interaction.
The site will contain a variety of housing types, including a 3 story, 70 unit senior apartment building, 4- and 6-plex townhomes, duplexes, and 7 single family lots which will be sold at market rate to offset development costs. Site amenities are included that will foster community interaction including a community garden, central green with playground, community building, and walkways/trails with site furnishings.
Energy efficiency is incorporated into the site design by maintaining a primarily east/west building orientation to take advantage of passive solar gain for the units.
Two 6-plex units were placed specifically in a north south orientation to enclose the Community Green, an area that will serve as an outdoor gathering space for the entire neighborhood.
Parking is provided at the rear of buildings where feasible, with buildings fronting towards streets to reinforce the community and integrate with the surrounding neighborhood.
